Training Course on Sustainable Agriculture and VietFarm Standards for Small Farmers in the northern mountainous region

From 2 to 6 November 2018, the Center for Development and Integration (CDI) organized a training course on sustainable agriculture for nearly 40 northern mountainous farmers at VietFarm Sustainable Agriculture Training Center , Tan Lap, Moc Chau, Son La. Experts in organic agriculture and clean agriculture teached and trained with numerous experiences and useful lessons.

Trainees were farmers from 6 tea, coffee, fruit and vegetable groups in Son La and Lai Chau province. Production groups are provided with detailed instructions how to apply VietFarm Standards in production to standardize output, meet domestic and foreign markets and ensure social and environmental sustainability. The production teams jointly assessed the production situation and builded an action plan in the near future.

The course also instructed the trainees to practice techniques for sustainable agriculture such as: Shimamoto agricultural method and application of Japanese microbiological technology in agricultural production and agricultural waste treatment; Techniques for making clean agriculture; Method of self-producing  produce organic fertilizer, self-producing organic pesticides; Methods of shifting to organic farming… In addition to providing new techniques, the course also guided how to utilize the available resources  in agriculture: Considering grass as a resource and using locally available products (lemongrass, garlic, chili …) to prevent pests and replace chemical fertilizers.

The method of providing knowledge combined with in-class and on-farm practice helps the trainees to remember quickly and ask questions if needs. With simple conveynance, learning by doing, the trainees can practice what they have learnt as soon as they finish their course on the farm.

In addition, the production groups were learnt about agricultural start-up models, solution to upgrade value added and solution to upgrade the farm in the direction of agricultural tourism…

The course is one of the important activities to transfer the basic knowledge of sustainable agriculture, convey the requirements of VietFarm standards to farmers. Moreover, The course inspires a sustainable agriculture for farmers which enables them to aware and capture opportunities for higher value chains for agricultural products, thereby improving the family’s income.
