The farmers at Eakmat Hoa Dong Fair Agricultural Service Cooperative come from an ethnic minority called Ede in the Eakmat region. The Ede ethnic group live mostly in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. They are the 12th most populous of the 54 recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam, with an estimated population of over 330,000 people. Interestingly, the head of the family is always a woman. Children bear their mothers surname and sons are not entitled to an inheritance just because they are males. CDI has recognised the ability to help women in this community with ease without any male driven dominance and therefore creating a more equal world for all by promoting gender equality.
The coffee produced by the cooperative is of the highest quality. Made from ripe cherries that are hand picked and grown under ecologically sustainable conditions in accordance with Vietfarm standards. They are grown at 700 metres above sea level on the Basaitic Highlands of Hoa Fong, Nam Dak Province. This is where they have mastered the process of selecting the very best beans and roast their coffee in a traditional way to obtain the pure, unique taste of traditional organic Vietnamese coffee.
Vietfarm standards have benefited the cooperative immensely to gain global recognition for its products showing traditional agricultural practices can be environmentally and socially sustainable by restricting dangerous chemicals which are proven to be damaging to both the environment and the health of producers and consumers. As well as being Vietfarm certified, Eakmat Hoa Dong Fair Agicultural Service Cooperative have been Fair Trade certified since 2013
