Expanding VIETFARM STANDARDS IN AGRICULTURE PRODUCTION

(VietFarm) – The VietFarm standard is part of a program sponsored by the Irish Embassy in Vietnam with the Center for Development and Integration (CDI) to promote Vietnamese agriculture to produce environmentally sustainable values. and society is suitable for small producers to enter the market and meet the quality standard requirements of the international and domestic markets.

VietFarm – From Farm to Table is considered a method of promoting safe, organic production that directly provides fresh food for the health of consumers. VietFarm standard is an independent standard system that harmonizes international and domestic standards, but is suitable for the conditions and production culture of Vietnam.

At the beginning of this October, CDI and the Irish Embassy in Vietnam visited and worked in Moc Chau, Son La to re-examine the results of the program “Comprehensive development and market connection project for producers”. small agricultural production” funded by Irish Aid.

Accordingly, there are 4 cooperatives, farmer groups and ethnic women who produce safe and quality products that meet VietFarm standards to supply the market with higher value. On this occasion, Ms. Ireland Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam Elisa Cavacece met and discussed with farmers of Moc Chau Safe Agricultural Cooperative, thereby understanding the difficulties and challenges farmers face in the context of COVID. -19 now. To face and recover, now farmers in Tan Lap Commune, Chieng Di Commune, Moc Chau have reorganized and established cooperatives and linked together, committed to clean and organic production to be able to supply directly from farm to table according to the model “from farm to table – VietFarm to Table”. This is a way to increase the value of fresh – nutritious – safe food, serving urban consumers, but it can also establish a mechanism to encourage safe, organic production for a stable market in terms of price and quality. Consumers can establish trust with producers. This model has also been successfully developed in Ireland and many other countries, establishing a way of delivering organic, fresh and healthy products to consumers’ doorsteps.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nghia, a farmer of Moc Chau Cooperative, said that due to travel restrictions due to the epidemic, goods were backlogged and thrown away a lot. Doan Thi Thuy confided that a 4-5kg pumpkin last year was 25,000 VND, this year it has to be sold for 4,000-5,000 VND, only 1/5 of the old year’s price and as low as 1/2 of the production price. . The VietFarm standard chain has close technical instructions. Therefore, farmers want to connect with direct consumption chains, less need to go through merchant bridges. The biggest worry is that the products produced cannot be sold.

Organic agriculture and safe agriculture are gradually becoming requirements and trends in the market. Consumers and the international market will be more demanding, and expect safe and healthy products.

VietFarm standards are developed with 10 topics and 105 criteria, including requirements on both organizational and production capacity factors of small producer groups, committing not to use young workers. children, non-discrimination, environmental sustainability, safety in production, natural products, safety and quality and traceability, fair trade and transparency in the supply chain. However, the implementation of the standard will require farmers to invest in transforming production and farming models and organizing in groups for better compliance and self-monitoring mechanisms. The standard’s traceability and supply chain transparency also minimizes supply chain stores being able to purchase regular products and put it in quality labeled packaging. Ensuring consumer confidence in producers is achieved by traceability systems throughout the supply chain.

VietFarm standards encourage transparency in the supply chain, to be able to supply more directly, reducing the need for intermediaries. Supply chain linkage models can solve stable output and better and fairer prices for producers.

The special thing is that when applying VietFarm standards, through the organization of groups and cooperatives, small producers know how to gather together to have more power in price negotiation, because they can produce with high output. higher prices and understand what prices are acceptable, do not sell below the production price because organic production costs have taken more labor, investment costs for the environment are sustainable in terms of seeds, water, soil and biodiversity is higher than intensive production.
