On March 29, 2024, the Center for Development and Integration (CDI) joined forces with the Lien Mac Commune Farmers’ Association and the Nam Vu Clean Agricultural Cooperative to host a training course titled “VietFarm Standards & Sustainable Agriculture: Transitioning from Chemical Inputs to Natural Solutions." The event took place at the Ecotourism Experience Farm Nam Vu, situated in Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province, and catered to nearly 50 students, including members from the Nam Vu Cooperative, VAC Cooperative, and officials from the Lien Mac Commune Farmers’ Association.
A significant portion of the attendees comprised middle-aged women with limited exposure to modern science and technology. Despite this, the training course achieved success thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of the instructors. By the course’s conclusion, participants had acquired a deeper understanding of VietFarm Standards, encompassing guidelines for safe farming, organic cultivation, low-emission livestock management, and organic livestock rearing.
Although perceived as challenging by students, the VietFarm Standards were acknowledged for their potential to enhance product quality and facilitate market access. Notably, guava products from the Nam Vu Cooperative have already secured placement in the Winmart supermarket chain, meeting VietGAP standards.
Participants came to grasp that sustainable agriculture is not a novel concept but rather deeply ingrained in the traditional practices of farming communities. They recognized the detrimental effects of excessive use of pesticides and herbicides on soil, water, air quality, and personal health. Introduction to microbiological applications provided students with practical alternatives, empowering them to produce their own microbial products for composting and crafting on-site pesticides at a cost-effective rate. Encouraged by their newfound knowledge, students pledged to implement these techniques within their own households, bringing products developed during the training into practice.
Looking ahead, CDI pledges continued collaboration with the Nam Vu Cooperative to establish a sustainable agricultural model in the region. Additionally, efforts will be made to support the cooperative's transition towards becoming an eco-experience tourism center within Hai Duong Province, aligning with broader goals of environmental stewardship and community development.
